Before anything else, and before you have to read any further to find out: this site will never ask you to go without food. Not a little. Not for a short while. Not as an experiment. Never.
You can read the rest of this with your shoulders down, or you can close it now having got the one thing you came to check, and either of those is completely fine.
Here is why that sentence comes first.
Somebody in recovery who lands on a page about fasting is doing something quite brave and quite tiring at the same time. There is a scan that has to happen, and it happens fast, and it is looking for the sentence that will make this unsafe: a number, a length, a suggestion that a bit of it might be good for you, a description of emptiness as clean, an admiring word about somebody's discipline.
Nothing like that is on this page or anywhere on this site.
And you should not have to conduct that scan in the first place, which is a failure of the writing and not a failure of the reader, and this page is written by somebody who takes that seriously.
So sit down for a minute if you want to. The kettle is on and nothing here is going to be asked of you.

Your care stays exactly as it is
Let us be practical for a moment, because vague warmth is not much use.
Whatever your team has agreed with you, that is what stands. The meals, the timings, the plan, the appointments, the person you ring, all of it, exactly as it is. Nothing on this page adjusts a single element of that and nothing here is an opinion about it.
If any sentence anywhere on this site ever seems to be pulling against what your team has set, that sentence is wrong and their plan is right, and there is no tension to resolve.
You are not being asked to weigh a spiritual reason against your own care, and you never will be here. That is not a disclaimer. It is written that the Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works (Psalm 145:9), and it is the Holy Spirit who has been present in every appointment and every difficult meal and has never once been on the other side of your recovery.
And if today is heavier than a page can hold, if you are struggling, if you are frightened for yourself, please put this down and speak to somebody real: your doctor, your team, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anyone near you is in danger tonight. That is not a step away from God. That is exactly the sort of help He puts in a world on purpose, and using it is not a lesser kind of faith.
What God said about handling something already strained
There is a sentence in Isaiah about how God deals with what is already under pressure, and it is one of the gentlest lines in Scripture.
A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench.Isaiah 42:3
Look at what is being described. Not a strong reed being tested. A bruised one. Not a bright flame being fanned. A wick that is barely going, smoking, nearly out.
And the promise is not that they will be improved or trained or asked to prove something. The promise is about how He handles them. He does not break. He does not quench. That is a description of pressure being taken off rather than applied.
You are being handled by Someone who does not press on what is already sore. I am not saying that to be soothing: it is God describing His own manner in advance, in writing (Isaiah 42:3), and it is His Spirit, not this page, who makes that a real quality of a real Person rather than a lovely image.
What this whole site is actually for
Here is the thing everybody who reads this site is invited into, and it does not touch your plate at all.
The subject is not going without. The subject is a person turning toward God with the whole of themselves rather than only with their mouth. That is what is meant here by the body praying: not the removal of anything, but the turning of everything.
You have full access to every bit of that today, and it costs your body nothing. Scripture says draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you (James 4:8), and the second half of that sentence is entirely in His hands, and it is His Spirit who does the drawing near rather than anything anybody performs.
And there is no smaller version being offered to you here. That matters, so let it be plain: nobody is suggesting that since the main thing is closed, you might try a reduced one. There is no scale. There was never a scale. What is being handed to you is not the consolation edition, it is the actual thing, and the person eating three full meals today has exactly the same access to it as anybody else alive.
Here is the turn, and it does not ask anything of your body.
You are already fully in, with nothing outstanding and nothing to be excused from. He is not waiting on you to do a thing your care rules out and He is not withholding anything from a person whose recovery says no, because He is the one who described Himself as not breaking a bruised reed and not quenching a smoking flax (Isaiah 42:3). You have permission to receive everything this site is for without your plate coming into it once. The word puts it in your hands, casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you (1 Peter 5:7), and it is His Spirit who does the carrying, on a day when eating three meals is the right and good thing you are doing.
And nothing about your body is a lock on anything God has.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own kitchen, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of anything your body does or does not do. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely kind, and what God does about the things you are asking Him for and when is His, however He answers.
- Scan I run down every page like this one, you are real and you have found nothing here to be frightened of. Isaiah 42:3 is God describing His own manner in advance and in writing, and what He describes is hands that do not break a bruised reed and do not quench a smoking flax. In the name of Jesus I put that fear down today and I read with my shoulders down.
- Fear that I am receiving the reduced version of something, you are not God's word about me and you are not sitting in this kitchen any longer. James 4:8 hands me a verb and keeps the answering entirely in God’s own hands, and His Spirit is the one making that a door in my own morning rather than a consolation handed to me. There was never a scale, and I am not beneath the top of it, and I am free.
- Father, You have been in every appointment and at every difficult table and You have never once stood on the other side of my recovery. Your written word says You do not break what is bruised and do not quench what is barely burning (Isaiah 42:3), and Your Spirit is what makes that a Person rather than an image. This appetite is Yours today, and I am going to go and eat my breakfast now.
