The message came at four in the afternoon his time, which is the middle of the night there, and that is the worst version.
Because it means it has already happened. It means somebody decided at two in the morning that this could not wait, and it means that in the hours between the thing occurring and the message arriving, a household he loves has been dealing with it entirely without him.
He read it at his desk. He read it three times, which is what people do. And then he had a meeting.
That is the shape of it. He is the one they tell. He is the one who arranges and sends and rings the right person and knows which cousin can drive. He does it well and he has done it for eleven years, and there is not one member of that family who would say a word against how he has carried them.
And he is four thousand miles away, which means that everything he does arrives late and by phone, and every crisis is one he hears the end of first.
The particular thing he has never described to anybody is the hours. Not the news itself. The hours in between, sitting at a desk in a building where nobody knows, with a body full of adrenaline and absolutely nothing to do with it.
And an uncle said, on a call, with complete love: my son, fast for them.
He said of course. And what he felt was not hope. It was recognition. Here at last was something to do with the hours, and he knew even as he thought it that turning a helplessness into a task is not the same as being helped.
If you have ever sat at a desk with adrenaline and nothing to do, come and sit at this table a while.

The helplessness is the actual subject
Let us name that properly, because everything else in this is built on it.
The problem is not that you do too little. Anybody looking at eleven years of what you have arranged would say the opposite. The problem is that distance turns a person into somebody who is always responding rather than present, and a body does not accept that. A body wants to stand up and go into a room, and when it cannot, the adrenaline has nowhere to go and stays in you all afternoon.
You are not failing them, and the distance was never a form of neglect. That is not a courtesy offered to a man at a desk. It is written that the Lord looketh on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in you during every one of those afternoons, and He is not measuring a man by whether he can get into a room.
What is underneath that house
There is a line at the end of Deuteronomy, spoken over a people about to go somewhere their leader could not follow them into, and the image in it is exact.
The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.Deuteronomy 33:27
Look at the word underneath.
Not around them, which would be a fence. Not ahead of them, which would be a guide. Underneath, which is the position of whatever is holding a thing up, and it is the one position you cannot occupy from four thousand miles away and were never able to occupy at all.
Moses said it knowing perfectly well that he was not going with them. He was the man who had carried that people for forty years and he was about to stop being available, and this is the sentence he chose to leave them with. Not: I will find a way to be there. Underneath are the everlasting arms.
You are not the floor under that house, and the arms that are have never once been at a distance from it. I am not saying it to console a man in an office: it is the plain image of the verse and the position it names (Deuteronomy 33:27), and it is His Spirit, not this page, who makes it something a man can hold at four in the afternoon with a phone in his hand.
And going without does not close the distance
Here is a thing that has to be said plainly, because of exactly where your uncle's sentence landed.
Going without food is not a way of being in the room. It does not reach across anything and it is not a covering over a house, and if it were, then every ordinary week would be a week that house was uncovered, and no family should live under that and God has never issued it.
You are not what stands between that household and disaster, and you were never appointed to be. Scripture says the Lord is thy keeper, the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand (Psalm 121:5), and it is His Spirit who makes that a real allocation rather than a comfort, and the keeping in that verse does not need anybody to be nearby.
What is true is smaller and better: the praying you already do arrives instantly and does not travel, because it was never crossing a distance in the first place.
Now the sentence this site says everywhere. Some people must not go without food at all, and being one of them takes nothing away from you. Diabetes, medication, any hard relationship with eating, being underweight, unwell, or simply unsure: speak to your doctor and let their answer be the answer. And a man running on adrenaline and other people's crises needs feeding, not one more thing taken off him. You are not one step further from God because of what your body needs. Scripture says the Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works (Psalm 145:9), and the Holy Spirit has never once come in a smaller measure to anybody on account of a body.
And if this week has more in it than a page can carry, if you are frightened for yourself, put this down and telephone somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight. That is not a road around God. That is help He put in the world on purpose.
Here is the turn, and it takes something off you.
You are held up by the same arms that house is, and neither of those positions was ever yours to occupy. He is not waiting on you to find a way to be present and He is not withholding anything until you do more from a distance, because the man who had carried a whole people left them with a sentence about what is underneath rather than a promise to be nearby (Deuteronomy 33:27). You have permission today to sit with the hours instead of turning them into a task. The word puts it in your hands, casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you (1 Peter 5:7), and it is His Spirit who is already in the room you cannot get to, and has been since long before the message was sent.
Go on arranging. Go on sending. Go on being the one they tell. That part is yours and it is good. What you can set down is the belief that four thousand miles is a gap that you are responsible for closing.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the courtyard or at your desk, in whatever language you pray in when nobody is listening. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of how much you can arrange from a distance. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely capable, and what God does about that family and when is His, however He answers.
- Distance between me and that house, you are real and you are not what holds them up. The eternal God is their refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms, and Deuteronomy 33:27 names a position I could never occupy even from the next street. In the name of Jesus I put down the closing of that distance today and I leave it closed by Him.
- Fear that I am the difference between them and disaster, you are not God's word about me and you are not sitting at my desk any longer. The Lord is thy keeper, the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand, and His Spirit is the one making that a real allocation rather than a comfort. The keeping needs nobody nearby, and I was never appointed, and I am free.
- Father, You are already in the room I cannot get to and You were there before the message was sent. Your written word says the everlasting arms are underneath (Deuteronomy 33:27), and Your Spirit is what makes that something a man can hold at four in the afternoon. Their names are out of my mouth and into Your hands, and I am going to go and eat properly now.
