He was the one who got out and went to school for it, and that is a sentence his whole family says with pride, and it is also a job description nobody ever read to him.
He is thirty one. He rings home on Sundays and there is always something in the call: a form somebody cannot fill in, a bill that has gone wrong, a cousin who needs talking to, an appointment that needs somebody who can speak the right way to the person on the other end of the phone.
He does all of it and he does it gladly, mostly. He loves them and they are not asking for anything unreasonable and every single request on its own is small.
What nobody has ever weighed is the total.
And there is a second thing sitting underneath the first, which is heavier and which he has never said to a living soul. When he was nineteen and it was all being decided, half that family went without for him. He knows that. They tell the story at gatherings and they tell it with love. And so he is not simply the one they ring. He is the answer to something, and answers are not allowed to be tired.
He has not told them how he actually is. He is not going to. What would he even open with?
And an auntie said last month, warmly, about a matter in the family: we should all fast about it, and you should be praying too.
He said of course. And what moved in him was not hope. It was the sensation of a man who is already the plan being asked to be the plan harder.
If you are somebody's answer and you are exhausted, come up here and sit down. Somebody has put a plate in front of you.
Name what is actually heavy
Let us be exact about it, because the wrong thing usually gets named.
It is not the forms. A form takes ten minutes and any one of those calls is genuinely small. What is heavy is being the answer. It is knowing that a household went without for you, that the story gets told at gatherings, that your success is not just yours but is the thing a family points at, and that somewhere in the arrangement there is no version of you that is allowed to be finished.
That is not ingratitude. Every bit of the pride they have in you is real and so is every bit of the love. And a person can be entirely loved and entirely unable to say they are tired, in the same house, at the same table.
You are allowed to be exhausted, and being the answer to something never suspended that. That is not a soft word said to a young man on a porch. It is written that the Lord looketh on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been reading yours through every Sunday call, and He has never once required you to be the plan.
What an angel did for a man at the end of himself
There is a moment in Kings where a prophet had done the enormous thing and then collapsed under a tree and asked to die, and what happens next is the most practical thing in the Bible.
He does not get a rebuke. He does not get a lecture about how many people are depending on him. He gets sleep, and then he gets food, and then he gets more sleep, and then more food.
And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.1 Kings 19:7
Read the reason at the end. Because the journey is too great for thee.
That is not a criticism. It is an accurate assessment, delivered by heaven, and what heaven does about it is feed him. Not: pull yourself together. Not: think of the nation. Arise and eat, because this is too big for you.
You are being handled by a God who feeds people at the end of themselves rather than asking them for more. I am not saying it to make an exhausted week bearable: it is what the angel said and what he did about it (1 Kings 19:7), and it is His Spirit, not this page, who makes that a real thing at a table on a Sunday.
Notice the direction of that, because on a site about going without it is the whole point. When a man had nothing left, God's answer was a meal.
Nobody was ever the mechanism
Here is a thing that needs saying plainly, because of what nineteen year old you absorbed.
What that family went without when you were nineteen did not buy anything, because nothing was for sale. It was love, expressed the way they know how, and it was real. It was not a transaction and you are not a return on it, and you do not owe an outcome to anybody.
You are not what holds that family up, and you were never appointed to be. Scripture says the Lord is thy keeper, the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand (Psalm 121:5), and it is His Spirit who makes that a real allocation rather than a comfort, and the keeping of that household has never once run through one young man.
Now the sentence this site says everywhere. Some people must not go without food at all, and being one of them takes nothing away from you. Diabetes, medication, any hard relationship with eating, being underweight, unwell, or simply unsure: speak to your doctor and let their answer be the answer. And a man carrying an entire family's expectations needs feeding, not one more thing taken off him. You are not one step further from God because of what your body needs. Scripture says the Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works (Psalm 145:9), and the Holy Spirit has never once come in a smaller measure to anybody on account of a body.
And if this week has more in it than a page can carry, if you are frightened for yourself, put this down and ring somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight. That is not a road around God. That is help He put in the world on purpose.
Here is the turn, and it takes weight off you rather than adding to it.
You are the one heaven feeds, and being tired is an accurate assessment rather than a failure. He is not waiting on you to be the plan harder and He is not withholding anything until you produce an outcome for that family, because when the journey was too great for a man the answer sent from heaven was food and sleep (1 Kings 19:7). You have permission today to be finished, and to say so to one person. The word puts it in your hands, casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you (1 Peter 5:7), and it is His Spirit who does the actual carrying of that household, which has never at any point been resting on a thirty one year old.
Go on filling in the forms. Ring on Sundays. That part is yours and it is good. What you can set down is the belief that you are the answer and answers are not allowed to be tired.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, up here or in the car, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of what you have made of yourself. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely capable, and what God does about that family and when is His, however He answers.
- Expectation sitting on me, you are real and you are not the load God gave me. An angel touched a man at the end of himself and said arise and eat, because the journey is too great for thee, and 1 Kings 19:7 calls that an assessment and answers it with a meal. In the name of Jesus I stop being the plan today and I eat what is in front of me.
- Fear that I owe them an outcome, you are not God's word about me and you are not sitting at this table any longer. The Lord is thy keeper, the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand, and His Spirit is the one making that a real allocation rather than a comfort. What they went without bought nothing, because nothing was for sale, and I am free.
- Father, when a man had nothing left Your answer was food and sleep and then more of both. Your written word says the journey is too great for thee, and does not once call that a failing (1 Kings 19:7), and Your Spirit is what makes that real at my own family's table. Their names are out of my mouth and into Your hands, and I am going to go and eat sitting down.
