Sunday evening, and the dishwasher is going, and that is the loudest thing in the house.
He is in the kitchen. She is in the front room with the lamp on. Neither of them is angry. That is the strange part, and it is the part he has never managed to explain to anybody, because if he says it out loud it sounds like nothing at all. Nobody shouted. Nobody slammed a door. They asked each other about the traffic and about her sister and whether the bins went out, and every single answer was kind.
They have been careful with each other for six years.
He can date it roughly, though not to a day. There was a bad stretch, and then the bad stretch ended, and what came in behind it was not warmth. It was manners. Two people being extremely considerate in a house with a good sofa in it.
He has prayed about it. He wants that on the record, standing at this counter with a tea towel in his hand, because some nights he suspects God has forgotten how much he has prayed about it. He prayed in the car park at work. He prayed lying flat on his back at two in the morning listening to her breathe. He prayed the polite prayers and he prayed one or two that were not polite at all.
And on Thursday a man he respects, over coffee, meaning it entirely kindly, leaned in and said: have you thought about fasting for it?
He said he would think about it. He has thought about very little else since. And what he heard underneath that kind sentence, though the man never said it and would be horrified to know, was that there was one more thing he had not done yet, and that the quiet in his own front room was still, somehow, his account to settle.
If you are the one drying a plate that does not need drying, put the towel down and come and sit with me a minute.

Nobody is marking your prayers
Let us get this out of the way first, because otherwise you will read everything else with your shoulders somewhere up around your ears.
You have not prayed this badly, and you are not being kept waiting for a better sentence. That is not me being nice to you at the counter. It is what is written, that the Lord looketh on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been carrying every one of those car park prayers into a place your words could never have reached on their own.
Something happens to a person who loves somebody across a small quiet distance. The love does not shrink. It has nowhere to go, so it turns into work, and prayer stops being a conversation and starts being a shift you clock into. Then a kind man over coffee adds one more task to the list, and you take it, because right now you would take anything.
What God actually said about how things move
There is a sentence in Zechariah spoken to a man staring at a job far too big for him, and it is not a technique.
Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.Zechariah 4:6
Read who that sentence takes the weight off. Not the mountain. The man.
Zerubbabel was looking at unfinished work and a long delay and every reason on earth to believe the whole thing had stalled on him personally. God did not hand him a method. God told him whose strength the thing was going to move by, and it was never going to be his.
You are not the engine of this, and you were never meant to be. I am not inventing that to comfort you on a Sunday night: it is the plain sense of what God said out loud to a man standing exactly where you are standing (Zechariah 4:6), and it is His Spirit, not my paragraph, that makes it land in the actual kitchen you are in.
So what is fasting, then, if it is not the lever that finally shifts a marriage?
The smaller, better answer
Here is the honest one, and it is smaller than the thing that man handed you over coffee, and a great deal better.
Fasting is not a payment. It is not leverage. It is not the missing piece, and it is not information God was waiting on. It is the body joined to a prayer that was already being prayed. It is the whole of a person, the part that gets hungry and tired and stands at a counter at nine at night, turned toward God with empty hands.
Nothing on this page is going to tell you how, or how long, or what kind. There is no plan here, because a plan is the very thing that would turn this back into a transaction, and a transaction is exactly what your marriage does not need one more of.
And here is the part that gets said plainly rather than tucked in at the end. Some people must not go without food at all, and being one of them takes nothing from you. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with eating, if you are underweight or unwell or simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything, and let their answer be the answer. You are not further from God on the strength of a medical note. Scripture says the Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works (Psalm 145:9), and the Holy Spirit has never once arrived in a smaller measure because of what a body can or cannot do.
And if tonight has more in it than a page can hold, if you are frightened for yourself or for the person in the next room, put this down and ring somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if anyone in your house is in danger. That is not a detour around God. That is the kind of help He puts in a world on purpose.
Here is the turn, and it is not a bigger effort.
The moving of this is His, and it always has been. He is not waiting on your hunger and He is not withholding warmth from your house until you find the right key, because there is no key: the word He gave Zerubbabel is the same word over your front room, not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit (Zechariah 4:6). You have permission, right now, to stop being the engine. Scripture handed it to you already, cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee (Psalm 55:22), and the Spirit is the one who takes the actual weight the moment you let go of it rather than merely agreeing that you should.
What is left for you today is small enough to do standing up.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own kitchen, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ, and it is not issued on the strength of how well you have coped. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely determined, and what God does about your marriage and when is His, however He answers.
- Politeness in this house, you are real and you are not the last word over us. This does not move by might and it does not move by power, it moves by the Spirit of the Lord of hosts, and Zechariah 4:6 says so in words I did not write. In the name of Jesus I put six years of careful quiet into God's hands tonight and I take it back out of mine.
- Fear that I am the one holding this up, you are not God's word about me and you are not standing in my kitchen any longer. The Lord looks on the heart and He has been reading mine in every car park I ever prayed in, and His Spirit carried those prayers further than my sentences ever went. I am not the engine, and I am not the remedy, and I am free.
- Father, You are the God who told a tired man whose strength the work would move by, and You said it before he thought to ask. I thank You that You have never once graded how I prayed, and that the mending was never mine to finish. The word is out of my mouth and into Your hands, and I am going to go and do something ordinary now.
