Not A BargainPsalm 25:7

The Deal A Fifteen Year Old Made

This message is for the bargain I made with God when I was fifteen, in a bedroom, about something I had done, and the fact that a grown woman is still living under it

She was fifteen, and the carpet was that flat brown they put in bedrooms in the nineties, and she can still tell you exactly where the light was coming from.

She had done something. It does not matter what and it was almost certainly smaller than it felt, which is the way of it at fifteen. And she sat on that carpet with her back against the bed and she made God an arrangement.

The arrangement was this: I will never ask You for anything big. Just keep this quiet, and I will never ask You for anything big again.

She is forty four now. She has a job and a car and a kitchen with a proper spice rack in it. And she has never asked God for anything big.

That is the whole thing, and she only saw it last year. Not because she is unfaithful, and not because she does not believe He could. It is a habit of the mouth. When she prays, the large things do not come out. Something in her routes around them the way a person routes around a sore tooth, and she has been doing it since a girl on a brown carpet set the terms.

She has prayed plenty. Small things, kindly things, other people's things. She is the one who remembers to pray for everybody else's operations.

And a friend said, over coffee, entirely well meaning: have you thought about fasting for that thing you mentioned?

She said maybe. She has thought about it every day since. And what came up in her was not hope. It was a fifteen year old on a carpet, going very still, because here was somebody suggesting she ask for something big.

If a teenager set the terms you are still living under, come and sit down here for a bit.

The Deal A Fifteen Year Old Made

The girl on the carpet was not wicked

Let us start there, because she has been carrying something for a very long time and nobody has ever said this to her.

She was fifteen. She was frightened, and she was in a room on her own with something she thought was enormous, and she did the most rational thing available to a fifteen year old: she made herself small so she would not be noticed. Children negotiate for safety. It is not a character flaw. It is what a person does before anybody has told them what the arrangement actually is.

You are not being told off, and you were never once held to a child's terms. That is not a soft opening for a woman with a coffee in her hand. It is written that the Lord looketh on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and the Holy Spirit is the one who was in that bedroom, reading what was actually happening in a frightened girl, and it was not commerce. It was hiding.

What He said He remembers instead

There is a sentence in the Psalms about youth and about memory, and it is one of the boldest things anybody in Scripture ever asked for.

Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me, for thy goodness sake, O LORD.Psalm 25:7

Look at the swap he asks for, and look at the reason he gives for it.

He does not say remember me because of what I have done since. He asks God to remember him according to mercy, and then he gives the ground: for thy goodness sake. The basis is entirely on God's side of the sentence. There is nothing on the reader's side of it at all.

You are remembered according to mercy, and that was settled without your involvement. I am not saying it to be nice to somebody who had a hard adolescence: it is what David asks for and it is the reason he gives (Psalm 25:7), and it is His Spirit, not this page, who takes it from a verse you would agree with into something that changes what comes out of your mouth when you pray.

The girl on the carpet made herself small to stay safe. She was already safe. Nobody had told her, and the not being told is the whole tragedy of it, and it is not her fault and it is not yours.

So what is fasting for, if it is not the price of asking

Here is the honest answer, and it is smaller and kinder than the one that went still in your chest.

Fasting is not a payment, and it is not the permission slip that lets a person ask for something big. It is not the missing piece. It is the body brought into a prayer that was already being prayed. It is the whole of a person, including the part that gets hungry and tired and has a habit of routing around the large things, turning toward God with empty hands.

And here is the trap for somebody who set terms early, so let us name it out loud. Do not let it become the new terms. A person who has been small on purpose will offer smallness in a new form: more effort, more sincerity, a purer motive, a stricter week, a smaller ask. You are not required to bring any of that, and none of it was ever the currency. Scripture says it is not of works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:9), and it is His Spirit who makes that a widening in your chest rather than a doctrine in your notes.

Now something said in the open here and not in small print. Some people must not go without food at all, and being one of them takes nothing away from you. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with eating, if you are underweight, unwell or simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything, and let their answer be the answer. This matters double for anybody young: no teenager should be told to go without food for a spiritual reason by anybody, and nothing on this page is ever asking that of them. You are not one step further from God because of a doctor's advice. Scripture says the Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works (Psalm 145:9), and the Holy Spirit has never once come in a smaller measure to anybody on account of a body.

And if this week has more in it than a page can carry, if you are frightened for yourself, put this down and ring somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anyone near you is in danger tonight. That is not a road around God. That is help He put in the world on purpose.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it takes something off you rather than adding to it.

You are allowed to ask for the large thing, and you always were. He is not waiting on a smaller version and He is not holding anything back until you shrink the request, because the terms a frightened girl set on a brown carpet were never signed by Him: remember not the sins of my youth, according to thy mercy remember thou me (Psalm 25:7). You have permission today to release a child from an arrangement she made in the dark. The word puts it in your hands, casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you (1 Peter 5:7), and it is His Spirit who takes the actual weight the moment you let go rather than merely agreeing that you should.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own front room, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of how little you have asked for. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely sensible, and what God does about the thing you finally ask Him for and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Terms I set at fifteen, you are real and you were never binding on God. He is asked to remember according to mercy and for His own goodness sake, and Psalm 25:7 puts the whole basis of it on His side of the sentence and none of it on mine. In the name of Jesus I release that girl from her arrangement today and I leave it released.
  2. Fear that asking for something big will get me noticed, you are not God's word about me and you are not sitting on my bedroom floor any longer. It is not of works, lest any man should boast, and His Spirit is turning that from a sentence I could agree with into room in my chest to breathe. I am not hiding, and I am not small, and I am free.
  3. Father, You were in that bedroom in 1997 and You never once accepted what a frightened girl offered You. Your written word says to remember me according to Your mercy for Your goodness sake (Psalm 25:7), and Your Spirit is what makes that something I can pray out of rather than something I merely believe. The deal is out of my mouth and out of my hands, and I am going to go and ask You for something big now.
