She made the offer at about half past two in the morning, sitting on the bathroom floor because it was the only room with a lock on it.
Her brother had been out there a long time by then. She had done every sensible thing. She had rung the numbers, kept the spare key, learned the names of two outreach workers, stopped lending and then started again and then stopped again, and she had held a phone in her hand at three in the morning more nights than she is willing to add up.
And on the bathroom floor she said, out loud, the sentence.
God, if You bring him home, I will never do that thing again. You know the one.
She has never told anybody what the thing is. It does not matter for this page and it is nobody's business. What matters is that she meant it entirely, and that she has been listening to that sentence in her own voice ever since, and that on the bad days it has curdled into something else: a suspicion that her brother is out there because she went back to it.
She has prayed properly, too. She wants that said. She has prayed with the church and she has prayed in the car and she has prayed the good prayers with Scripture in them, and she has prayed the ones that are just a name over and over until it stops sounding like a word.
And after a service last month a sister she loves, who has never been anything but kind to her, said: you know what, have you fasted for him?
She said she would. She has thought about very little else. And what moved in her chest, standing in a church kitchen with a tea towel over her shoulder, was not hope. It was recognition. Here was one more thing she could put on the table.
If you have made an offer on a bathroom floor, come here and sit down. I am not going to say one word to you about it.

Nothing you said in that room shocked heaven
Let us settle that in the first minute, because otherwise you will read this whole page braced for a telling off, and none is coming.
There is nothing shameful about the sentence you said on that floor. Hannah said one. Jacob said one with a stone for a pillow. It is what love does at half past two when it has run out of every single thing it can control, and it comes up out of the same place as your best praying.
You are not in any trouble for it, and you were never once graded on the wording. That is not me being gentle with a woman holding a tea towel. It is written that the Lord looketh on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and the Holy Spirit is the one who read what was actually happening in you at half past two, which was not commerce. It was love with nothing left to spend.
So nobody here is telling you off. There is something better than that to say, and it is this: the offer was never required.
What He said He actually wanted
There is a sentence in Hosea where God tells His own people what He is after, and it is the shortest correction in the book.
For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.Hosea 6:6
Look at what He does there. He does not raise the price. He removes the counter.
Those people were not being told they had offered too little. They had brought plenty. God says the whole transaction was the wrong shape, and that what He wanted was mercy and the knowledge of Himself, which are not things anybody can pay with because they are things you receive.
You are wanted, and it is you He is after and not your surrender terms. I am not putting that gently to spare a woman on a Saturday: it is God's own sentence about His own preferences (Hosea 6:6), and it is His Spirit, not this page, who turns it from a verse you can quote into a bathroom floor that feels different when you remember it.
So what is fasting, if it is not the price
Here is the honest answer, and it is smaller and better than the one that has been going round your head.
Fasting is not a payment. It is not leverage. It is not the missing piece, and it is not a stronger version of what you said on the floor. It is the body joined to a prayer that was already going up. It is the whole of a woman, including the part that gets hungry and tired and sits with her back against a bathroom door, turning toward God with nothing at all in her hands.
And hear this, because it is the trap set for somebody like you. Do not let it become the new offer. A person who has been trading will pick up whatever is nearest and put that on the table too: sincerity, effort, feeling it hard enough, a purer heart, a cleaner week. You are not asked for any of it, and none of it was ever the currency. Scripture says plainly that it is not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us (Titus 3:5), and it is His Spirit who makes that a weight lifting rather than a doctrine you nod at.
Now something said out loud here and not in small print. Some people must not go without food at all, and being one of them takes nothing away from you. If you live with diabetes, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication, if you have ever had a hard relationship with eating, if you are underweight, unwell or simply not sure, speak to your doctor before you go without anything, and let their answer be the answer. You are not one step further from God because of what a doctor told you. Scripture says the Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works (Psalm 145:9), and the Holy Spirit has never once come in a smaller measure to anybody on account of a body.
And if tonight has more in it than a page can hold, if you are frightened for yourself or for him, put this down and ring somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger. That is not a road around God. That is help He put in the world on purpose.
Here is the turn, and it takes weight off rather than adding it.
You are already held, and you have been held on ground you did not buy. He is not waiting on your surrender terms and He is not keeping your brother out there until you pay something, because there is nothing to pay: He said He desired mercy and not sacrifice, and He said it to people who were bringing plenty (Hosea 6:6). You have permission tonight to take the offer off the table. The word puts it in your hands, cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee (Psalm 55:22), and His Spirit is the one who takes the actual weight the moment you let go rather than merely agreeing that you should.
And your brother is not out there because of you. Write that on the back of your hand if you need to.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the kitchen, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of a clean month. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely determined, and what God does about your brother and when is His, however He answers.
- Trade I offered in the dark, you are real and you were never asked for. God said He desired mercy and not sacrifice, and Hosea 6:6 says it to people who had brought Him plenty, so the problem was never the size of what I put down. In the name of Jesus I take that offer off the table tonight and I leave it off.
- Fear that he is out there because of me, you are not God's word about me and you are not sitting on my bathroom floor any longer. It is not by works of righteousness which I have done but according to His mercy, and His Spirit is the one making that a floor under me rather than a line I can recite. I am not the reason, and I am not the ransom, and I am free.
- Father, You never asked for my terms and You have never once wanted the thing I offered instead of me. Your written word says You desire mercy and the knowledge of You more than burnt offerings (Hosea 6:6), and Your Spirit is what makes that an invitation I can actually accept. The deal is out of my mouth and out of my hands, and I am going to go and do something ordinary now.
