Already MovingPsalm 23:5

You Can Be In The Room With It Now

This message is for being unable to name one thing God has done, while having gone from not being able to hear the subject mentioned to sitting in a room where it is discussed and staying in my chair

Somebody brought the subject up on Sunday, at that table, in front of eleven people, and she stayed exactly where she was.

Nothing about that felt like an achievement at the time. It was a conversation. Somebody mentioned a situation like hers, and it went round the table for a few minutes the way things do, and she drank her tea and said one or two ordinary things and then somebody asked about the sandwiches.

It was in the car that it caught up with her.

Two years ago she could not do that. Two years ago the subject coming up in a room was a physical event: something happened behind her sternum, and she would find a reason to be needed in the kitchen, and she got very good at leaving without appearing to leave.

She did not decide to stop. There was no moment. She has simply been sitting in her chair for a while now, without noticing, in rooms where the thing gets mentioned.

And the situation itself is exactly where it was. She wants that stated, because she can see the shape this kind of article usually takes and she is not going to be moved gently toward a conclusion about her circumstances.

And a friend said on Sunday, meaning it entirely well: keep going, fast about it again.

She said she would. And what she thought in the car was different from usual, and it was a question: what else has been happening that I have not been counting?

If you have stopped having to leave the room, come and sit at this table.

You Can Be In The Room With It Now

Nothing here reinterprets your situation

Let us settle that first, because everything else depends on your trusting it.

The thing is where it was. This page is not going to suggest that it has secretly shifted or that you would see progress if you looked at it more generously, because that is asking a person to argue with their own eyes and it is not what is happening here.

You are not being managed toward a conclusion, and your account of the facts has been right the whole time. That is not a soft opening. It is written that the Lord looketh on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in every one of those rooms with you, including the ones you left, and He has never once asked you to pretend about a circumstance.

There is simply a second location, and Sunday happened in it.

Where the table is set

There is a line in the most familiar psalm in the world, and the preposition in it is the whole point.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.Psalm 23:5

Read where the table is. Not after they have gone. In the presence of.

That is a picture of somebody eating, unhurried, with a napkin, in a place that has not been cleared of the thing that troubles them. The psalm does not describe a rescue from the room. It describes provision inside it, with everything still present.

David could have written a line about the enemies being removed. He wrote about a table, set, in front of him, with them still there, and that is a different and much stranger comfort.

You are being fed in the presence of it, and that is what the verse actually describes. I am not saying it to make a Sunday sound bigger than it was: it is the preposition the psalm chooses and the picture it builds (Psalm 23:5), and it is His Spirit, not this page, who has been setting a table in rooms you used to walk out of.

And nothing here becomes a prediction

Here is the sentence that has to be said plainly, because this is precisely where a page like this normally spoils what it has just handed over.

Staying in your chair on Sunday is not a sign. It does not mean the situation is turning, it is not the first stage of anything, and it does not tell you one thing about next year.

You are not carrying a forecast, and nobody here knows what comes next. Scripture says it is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power (Acts 1:7), and it is His Spirit who makes that a relief rather than a disappointment, because a small true thing stops being yours the moment it is turned into evidence about the future.

And what you went without over the years bought nothing, in either direction. It did not fail, and it did not quietly succeed on the inside instead. There was no transaction in it anywhere.

Now the sentence this site says everywhere. Some people must not go without food at all, and being one of them takes nothing away from you. Diabetes, pregnancy, medication, any hard relationship with eating, being underweight, unwell, elderly or simply unsure: speak to your doctor and let their answer be the answer. You are not one step further from God because of what your body needs. Scripture says the Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works (Psalm 145:9), and the Holy Spirit has never once come in a smaller measure to anybody on account of a body.

And if this week has more in it than a page can carry, if you are frightened for yourself, put this down and ring somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight. That is not a road around God. That is help He put in the world on purpose.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it does not ask you to conclude anything about the situation.

You are being provided for inside the room rather than lifted out of it, and that is precisely what the psalm describes. He is not waiting on you to notice and He is not withholding anything until you sound more grateful, because the table in that verse is set in the presence of the very thing that troubles the person eating (Psalm 23:5). You have permission today to count Sunday without making it mean anything about next year. The word puts it in your hands, casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you (1 Peter 5:7), and it is His Spirit who has been in rooms you used to leave, doing something nobody at that table would have seen.

The thing is where it was. Both sentences stand together and you do not have to trade one for the other.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the car or the kitchen, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of what has changed outside you. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely observant, and what God does about your situation and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Thing that has not moved, you are real and you are not the only place to look. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies, and Psalm 23:5 sets that table in the room rather than after the room has been cleared. In the name of Jesus I count what happened on Sunday today and I leave the situation exactly as I found it.
  2. Fear that noticing something small is a way of giving up on the big thing, you are not God's word about me and you are not sitting in my car any longer. It is not for me to know the times or the seasons which the Father has put in His own power, and His Spirit is the one making that a relief rather than a disappointment. I am carrying no forecast, and I have given up on nothing, and I am free.
  3. Father, You have been setting a table in rooms I used to walk out of and nobody at that table would have seen it. Your written word describes provision inside the room and not rescue from it (Psalm 23:5), and Your Spirit is the one who has been doing the setting. The list is written and nobody will read it, and I am going to go and do something ordinary now.
