You Read The Quiet Differently Now

This message is for still having no answer after years, while the silence itself has stopped meaning what it used to mean to me, and having never once noticed that it changed

She sat down this morning the way she has sat down most mornings for six years, and nothing came, and she noticed something about herself that she has not been able to put down since.

Nothing coming is not new. That is the whole story of these six years and she has made her peace with the sentence, though peace is too tidy a word for what it actually is.

What is new is what the nothing did to her.

For a long time it did something specific. Silence arrived and it had a meaning attached, and the meaning was about her, and she did not have to construct it because it came fully formed: this is what you are worth to Him.

This morning the quiet was exactly as quiet. And she sat in it and drank her tea and it did not say that.

It did not say anything, in fact, which is not the same as saying something terrible, and it took her most of the morning to notice that those had ever been different things.

The situation is where it was and she is not going to let anybody suggest otherwise. She has been handled gently by people trying to move her toward a hopeful conclusion and she has become allergic to it.

And a friend said last week, kindly: have you tried fasting about it again?

She said she might. And what she thought, later, was a question with no answer attached: when did the silence stop being a verdict, and who did that?

If the quiet used to say something about you, come and sit down here for a while.

You Read The Quiet Differently Now

No answer is being announced here

Let us settle that before anything else, because you will not read on otherwise and you should not.

You have not had an answer. Nothing on this page pretends that a change in how the silence lands is a change in the silence, and nothing here suggests you have been misreading something all along and would feel better if you tried harder to be positive.

You are not being moved toward a conclusion, and nothing about your reading of these six years has been wrong. That is not a soft opening. It is written that the Lord looketh on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in that chair with you through every one of those mornings, including all the ones where the quiet said the cruel thing, and He has never once agreed with it.

There is a second location, that is all. And this morning happened in it.

What the quiet was in Kings

There is a famous scene about a man in a cave, and the part everybody quotes is at the end and the part that matters for you is the sequence.

He had the wind, and God was not in it. He had the earthquake, and God was not in it. He had the fire, and God was not in it either. Three enormous events, and every one of them empty.

And after the fire a still small voice.1 Kings 19:12

Read what the phrase actually is in the Hebrew shape of it: a sound of thin silence. That is the phrase. A quiet so fine it is nearly nothing at all, and that is where God was, after three spectacular absences.

That passage is not a promise that your quiet contains a voice. It is not being used here to tell you that you will hear something. It is here because it is Scripture's own testimony that silence is not automatically an absence, and that a man who had every reason to read the quiet as abandonment was in fact in the one place God was.

You are not required to read silence as a verdict, and Scripture itself refuses that reading. I am not saying it to lift a hard morning: it is the sequence the chapter gives and where it locates God (1 Kings 19:12), and it is His Spirit, not this page, who changes what a quiet room does to a person, which is a work nobody watches happen.

And this is not the start of anything

Here is the sentence that has to be said plainly, because this is exactly where a page like this usually ruins what it has just given.

What happened this morning is not a signal. It does not mean an answer is coming, it is not the beginning of a season, and it tells you nothing whatsoever about the year in front of you.

You are not holding a forecast, and nobody here knows what happens next. Scripture says it is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power (Acts 1:7), and it is His Spirit who makes that a relief rather than a disappointment, because the moment a small true thing is turned into evidence about the future it stops belonging to you and becomes a wager.

And what you went without over those years bought nothing, in either direction. It did not fail and it did not quietly work inwardly instead. Nothing in it was ever a transaction.

Now the sentence this site says everywhere. Some people must not go without food at all, and being one of them takes nothing away from you. Diabetes, pregnancy, medication, any hard relationship with eating, being underweight, unwell, elderly or simply unsure: speak to your doctor and let their answer be the answer. You are not one step further from God because of what your body needs. Scripture says the Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works (Psalm 145:9), and the Holy Spirit has never once come in a smaller measure to anybody on account of a body.

And if this week has more in it than a page can carry, if you are frightened for yourself, put this down and ring somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight. That is not a road around God. That is help He put in the world on purpose.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it does not ask you to conclude anything about the silence.

You are reading the quiet differently, and the change happened to you rather than to it. He is not waiting on you to notice and He is not withholding anything until you are more hopeful about it, because Scripture itself puts God inside a sound of thin silence after three spectacular absences (1 Kings 19:12). You have permission this morning to count that without deciding what it forecasts. The word puts it in your hands, casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you (1 Peter 5:7), and it is His Spirit who has been at work in a chair in a cold kitchen for six years while nobody kept any record of it.

There is still no answer. Both sentences stand together and you are not required to trade one for the other.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own kitchen, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of having received an answer. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely calm, and what God does about this and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Silence over all of it, you are real and you are not saying what you used to say. After the wind and the earthquake and the fire there was a sound of thin silence, and 1 Kings 19:12 puts God inside the quiet that a frightened man had every reason to read as abandonment. In the name of Jesus I stop reading silence as a verdict today and I do not go back to that reading.
  2. Fear that noticing this is a way of settling for less, you are not God's word about me and you are not sitting in this chair any longer. It is not for me to know the times or the seasons which the Father has put in His own power, and His Spirit is the one making that a relief rather than a disappointment. I am carrying no forecast, and I have settled for nothing, and I am free.
  3. Father, You have been in this chair through six years of mornings and never once agreed with what the quiet said about me. Your written word refuses to let silence mean absence (1 Kings 19:12), and Your Spirit is the one who changed what a quiet room does to me. The list is written and nobody will read it, and I am going to go and do something ordinary now.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
